GB Boxers earn three medals at World Boxing Cup in Kazakhstan

Three members of the GB Boxing squad returned from the second World Boxing Cup of the year, this time held in Astana, Kazakhstan, with bronze medals.

Lucy Kings-Wheatley (60kg), Patris Mughalzai (65kg), and Teagn Stott (85kg) all reached the semi-finals before falling short of the final.

Kings-Wheatley and Mughalzai each competed in three bouts, while Stott boxed twice.

Continuing her return from a year-long injury layoff, on her way to reaching the semi final stages, Kings-Wheatley earned a unanimous win over Canada’s Alessia Mansueto, followed by a 4:1 split decision victory against Mongolia’s Namun Monkhor. She was eventually defeated by Brazil’s Rebeca Santos De Lima in the lightweight semi final.

In the cruiserweight division, 21-year-old Stott started strong with a unanimous win over Bulgaria’s Semion Boldriev. However, he was then defeated by India’s Jugnoo Jugnoo in his semi-final bout, leaving him to settle with bronze.

Mughalzai faced Brazil’s Yuri Dos Reis in a tightly contested welterweight semi-final. With scores nearly level going into the final round, the Brazilian edged out a narrow 3-2 win.

Before that, Mughalzai had defeated Finland’s Ismail Umar and Fernando Piter Ynoa of the Dominican Republic.

The next major event on the World Boxing calendar is the inaugural World Boxing Championships, taking place 4–14 September 2025 in Liverpool.
