Nicola Adams and Sandy Ryan will join team mate Savannah Marshall in the quarter-finals of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Astana, tomorrow, following victories in today’s final set of preliminaries.
Nicola beat Azerbaijan’s Anna Alimardanova, and Sandy defeated Russian Daria Abramova, in the last 16 of the competition today. Both boxers won comprehensive points decisions.
Nicola has already qualified for a place in this summer’s Olympic Games, and Sandy is competing at a non-Olympic weight, but a quarter-finals win for Savannah will book her a place alongside Nicola at Rio 2016.

It is the final Rio 2016 qualifying event for female boxers and the women that were selected in the three Olympic weight categories are Nicola Adams (51kg flyweight), Chantelle Cameron (60kg lightweight) and Savannah Marshall (75kg middleweight).
Adams has already qualified for Rio 2016 by winning the European Continental Qualifying event in Turkey in April; Cameron’s hopes of representing Great Britain in the Olympics came to an end when she lost out to Finland’s Mira Potkonen in the prelimiinaries, and Marshall needs to finish in the top four in her weight class to book a place at Rio 2016.
The trio are joined by 2014 World Championship silver medallists, Lisa Whiteside (54kg bantamweight) who also lost out in the preliminaries, and Sandy Ryan (64kg light-welterweight), representing Great Britain in two of the non-Olympic weight categories.
Nicola Adams said: ‘I have won gold at every major tournament except the World Championships so I want to win this one to complete my collection.’
Four of the five woman team already possess a World Championship medal. Adams won silver in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Ryan took silver in 2014 as did Whiteside who also has a bronze medal from the 2012 competition. Marshall won silver in 2010 and went one better in 2012 when she became the first (and only) British women to win a World Championship in boxing.
Rob McCracken, Performance Director, GB Boxing said: ‘The World Championships is always a tough competition and the fact this is an Olympic qualifier only makes it more so. However, this is a talented and capable group of boxers and if they reach the standards that we know they are capable of then they will give themselves every chance of winning a medal and (in the Olympic weight categories) securing a place at Rio.’
