SIX men from the GB Boxing squad earned victories on day two of the World Boxing Cup: International Invitational 2024 to progress to the semi-final stages in Colorado, America.
England’s Patris Mugalzai, Lewis Richardson and Harris Akbar, Wales’ Owain Harris-Allan and Taylor Bevan and Scotland’s Reese Lynch all did enough in their opening bouts of the competition to reach the next stage, securing a medal in the process.
There was some disappointment on the day however as both Joe Tyers and Ramtin Musah exited the competition following narrow split defeats to Australia’s Jaggar Altoft (3:2) and Brazil’s Wanderley Pereira (4:1) respectively.
Up first and continuing his return to action following a lengthy injury lay-off, Reese Lynch faced Germany’s Ousainou Hansen.
And the Scot got himself and the team off to a flying start as he got the better of his opponent via a 4:1 split decision.
Similarly, fellow light-welterweight Patris Mughalzai then beat his opponent, USA’s Jahmal Harvey, who has already himself qualified for Paris 2024, also via 4-1 split.
The pair will now go up against each other in Friday’s semi-final.
The other and final victory in the first session of the day saw light-heavyweight Taylor Bevan get the better of China’s Tanglatihan Toucheterbieke unanimously.
It sets up a semi-final clash with the host nation’s Amir Anderson.
Moving into the second session of the day and Wales’ Owain Harris-Allan faced Frederik Jensen and the Welshman confidently beat the Dane via a unanimous points victory and will now face America’s Francis Stewart.
Elsewhere, Lewis Richardson and Harris Akbar will have to beat Keon Davis and Nikolai Terteryan if they wish to reach the light-middleweight final following their opening victories.
Richardson beat Czech Republic’s Milos Bartl via a 4:1 split whilst Akbar got the better of Sweden’s Kevin Scott unanimously.
Later on, today, eight women will compete to join their male teammates in Friday’s semi-final action. The full bout details are below:
