Sheffield’s Teagn Stott has become the fifth English boxer to guarantee a medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool after a second-round stoppage of Bulgaria’s Semion Boldirev in the cruiserweight quarter final.

He joins Chantelle Reid, Odel Kamara and Emily Asquith as a World Boxing Championship medallist and will not leave Liverpool with anything less than a bronze medal as well as Callum Makin who this evening bowed of the World Boxing Championships 2025 with a bronze medal after a loss to Paris Olympian and number one seed Rami Kiwan of Bulgaria.

Cruiserweight (W85kg), Stott, competing in day nine’s afternoon session started strongly using his sharp jab to good effect and inflicted a standing count on his opponent in the first.  He delivered two more standing counts in round two before the referee decided he had seen enough and called the contest off.

Stott said: “I’m happy. Not satisfied, but happy with a medal. There’s only one colour we all come for. So keep pushing on now.

“The less work we have to do, the better. It means I can get as much rest as possible, ready to crack on tomorrow and do the job again. But I’m really happy with a stoppage, you don’t get paid for overtime at the end of the day!

“I had my first fight the other day, and they weren’t my best performance, but I had that, got myself back into the motion and now, as you’ve just seen there, got the stoppage. All the gears are fully working now. Car’s in top gear, absolutely flying.

“There was more of a crowd in there today so I was really happy with the turn out and having them push me on…maybe that’s the reason I got the stoppage!”

He will face Ukraine’s Zhasan Danylo in tomorrow’s semi-final at 19:30.

Earlier in the session, Batley’s Alice Pumphrey lost out in her light-flyweight quarter final to Minakshi Minakshi from India to bring her competition to an end.

Into the evening session and Liverpool born Callum Makin’s defeat marked the end of an amazing journey for the 21-year-old who was only promoted to GB Boxing’s elite Podium Squad less than six months ago.

In a battle of the southpaws, the first round saw Kiwan use his long reach to try and take control with the jab, while Makin frequently countered by doubling up his own jab.

A point deduction for Makin in round two saw the Bulgarian take the upper hand and he saw the fight out in the third to secure a unanimous victory.

Makin said: “While I am disappointed with the result tonight, when I reflect on the last week or so, I can only be pleased with what I have achieved.

“Less than six months ago, I was in GB Boxing’s Academy squad with barely an international experience and now I am in the top four in the world.

“I want to thank my club coaches, the GB coaches and all the people that came out to support me. It means the world, and I hope I did you proud.

“It will be good to have a rest and then it will be back to GB Boxing and working with the coaches to improve and make sure that next time I go one further.”

Tomorrow’s action will see England’s other confirmed medallists compete in semi-finals with the aim of changing the colour of their medal and booking a place in their respective finals.

Up first is hometown hero, Kamara, who will take on Kazakhstan’s Torekhan Sabyrkhan at 70kg at 18:45.

He will then be followed by light-middleweight Reid as she goes up against Kazkhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova at 19:15.

Whilst England Boxing’s Performance Pathway senior squad member Emily Asquith faces India’s Pooja Rani at 20:15.
