CHANTELLE Reid became the first English boxer to book her place on the podium and guarantee a medal at the inaugural World Boxing Championships following a dominant quarter-final victory, on a day which also saw three other members of the GB Boxing squad move a step closer to medals themselves.

Alice Pumphrey, Dimeji Shittu and Teagn Stott also secured wins on a mixed day six in Liverpool at the M&S Bank Arena, while Lucy Kings-Wheatley and Patris Mughalzai bowed out of the competition following unanimous and split-decision defeats respectively.

Today’s results mean that eight members of the GB Boxing squad have reached the quarter-final stages, with Reid already through to the light-middleweight semi-finals.

It was another classy display from Reid in what was her third bout in six days. The 27-year-old Paris 2024 Olympian dismantled China’s Mengee Zhang with lightning hand speed and sharp footwork, stepping inside effectively to land clean combinations to both head and body en route to a unanimous decision.

Elsewhere, Dimeji Shittu impressed again as he won his second contest at light-heavyweight, using his jab and smart distancing to outbox Canada’s Nickenson Denis for a unanimous win.

In the evening session, Alice Pumphrey (48kg) began her campaign emphatically, outclassing Bulgaria’s veteran Sevda Asenova, who was docked two points in the second round, to claim a 5:0 victory.

Closing proceedings was birthday boy Teagn Stott, who, like teammate Pumphrey, was finally getting his competition underway. The cruiserweight, despite some back-and-forth exchanges, got the better of Czechia’s Daniel Komarek via a 4:0 split decision.

Both Stott and Pumphrey will compete in their quarter-final bouts on Friday.

Day seven of the World Boxing Championships will see six English boxers, including hometown heroes Odel Kamara and Callum Makin, step through the ropes in pursuit of a place in the semi-finals at the M&S Bank Arena.

The afternoon session features Kamara (70kg) against Mongolia’s Byamba-Erdene Otgonbaatar at approximately 14:45, followed immediately by Dimeji Shittu (80kg) who meets Hungary’s Pylyp Akilov at 15:00.

Attention then turns to the evening session where Sacha Hickey (65kg) faces Ukraine’s Navbakhor Khamidova at 19:00, before Will Hewitt (60kg) takes on Bulgaria’s Radoslav Rosenov at 20:15.

In the later contests, Callum Makin (75kg) boxes Canada’s Joshua Ofori at 21:15 in Ring A, while Damar Thomas (90+kg) closes the day in a high-profile clash with Cuba’s Olympic champion Julio César La Cruz at 21:30.
