Day four of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool brought mixed fortunes for GB boxers at the M&S Bank Arena.
Paris 2024 Olympian Chantelle Reid moved within one victory of a guaranteed medal, while Dimeji Shittu and Patris Mughalzairecorded their first wins of the tournament.
There was disappointment, however, as Ellis Trowbridge and Elise Glynn exited the competition, alongside Scotland’s Aaron Cullen.
Shittu was the first to secure victory on day four as he stepped into action against Czech Republic’s Adam Hajek. Using his reach to control the distance, he boxed with efficiency and by round three was cruising to a unanimous decision on all five judges’ scorecards.
Shittu said: “It’s good that all the stuff I’ve been working on in camp is coming to fruition and I’m executing it. When I box and I get that rhythm, get in that flow and I start enjoying it, I just love it.
“It’s been a long wait. Ask anyone. I’ve been itching all week. Even last night, I kept waking up in the middle of night check my phone like, oh, is it time? Is it time? But it’s here now, the first one out the way and I’m raring to go.”
Next up was Reid, who landed fast, clean combinations and held her ground in a gripping contest with Poland’s Barbara Marcinkowska. She took the opening round 3-2 after switching angles effectively, then rallied through a fiery second round before sealing victory with composure and power in the final stages – earning her second win of the week.
Reid said: “I just want to say a massive thank you to my corner, Graham. It’s good work we did today and I’m just happy with the performance and result of it.
“I think I’m just going to get better as the tournament goes on. I can’t see myself coming away from the competition with less than a gold medal now. I’ve come this far, I’ve put the effort in, training, the preparation for it’s been amazing. We’re going to get that gold medal.”
Closing the day’s action with the team’s final victory was Mughalzai, who faced USA’s Rene Camacho. After a cautious first round assessing his opponent, he used speed and movement to dominate the latter stages, frustrating Camacho and cruising to a composed points win.
