Liverpool’s Callum Makin became the second hometown boxer and the third from the GB Boxing squad to win a medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025 (WBC2025), when he defeated Canada’s Joshua Ofori by a split decision in this evening’s middleweight (M75kg) quarter-final at the M&S Bank Arena.
It means that boxers from the GB Boxing squad, who are competing in the England vest, are now guaranteed three medals at WBC2025 after Odel Kamara and Chantelle Reid both secured bronze in the men’s and women’s light-middleweight categories.
The England team also won a fourth bronze medal tonight when Emily Asquith defeated Tukey’s Elif Guneri to guarantee a bronze in the women’s light-heavyweight (W80kg) class. Asquith is not part of the GB Boxing Olympic programme (as light-heavy is not an Olympic weight for women), however she was selected for the WBC2025 by England Boxing and is part of the England team in Liverpool.
All four boxers will have a chance to change the colour of their medal in the semi-finals which take place on Friday 12thand Saturday 13th September, after a rest day on Thursday.
The wins for Kamara, Makin and Asquith were the high point of day in which the England team had eight boxers competing in quarter finals.
Sadly, it was not to be welterweight Sacha Hickey, lightweight William Hewitt, middleweight, middleweight Mark-Kate Smith and super-heavyweight Damar Thomas who all lost out in a series of close and hard-fought contests.
Tomorrow is a rest day and the action will return on Friday 12 September 2025 with a single ring in the M&S Bank Arena. It will feature quarter finals at light-flyweight (W48kg) and cruiserweight (M85kg) followed by semi-finals in four men’s and four women’s categories.
