THREE confident displays from GB Boxing’s Odel Kamara, Vivien Parsons and Ellis Trowbridge saw them progress to the semi-final stages of the World Boxing Cup Finals in Sheffield.
It means the trio have now secured medals ahead of tomorrow’s action where they can change the colour, with all eyes on gold.
There was some disappointment on day two at the English Institute of Sport however as Ivy-Jane Smith, Cameron McKay, Olivia Holmes and Scott Richards suffered defeat.
Liverpudlian Odel Kamara earned the first win of the day for Great Britain’s boxers.
The light-middleweight dominated all three of his rounds versus Mongolia’s Misheelt Battumur go earn a unanimous point victory and set up a semi-final clash with Panama’s Edurardo Beckford at 18:30 tomorrow.
Kamara said: “I was happy with my performance. Slowed down a lot in the last round, but I’d won five-nil both rounds, I knew I just had to keep them away from me and get the points win.
“I was made up to box on home soil. I just love the atmosphere. And it’s a select number of boxers that get to box in Sheffield. So, it’s an honour.
“I just need to try and just keep up the same kind of box and slip performance for the three rounds and it should be golden. Should win. Gold’s coming back. Back to Liverpool.”
Moving into the evening session and Vivien Parsons, in only her second bout as a GB Boxer, secured the team’s second victory of the day.
She did so in devastating fashion by administering four standing counts upon Italy’s Feredica Zanellato before the bout was brough to a half midway through the second round.
Parsons will tomorrow now face Thailand’s Preedakamon Tintabthai at 17:45pm for a place in the featherweight final.
Parsons said: “Happy with how I performed in there. I got the stoppage which is always nice and get ready to go tomorrow. Yeah. I felt good in there, felt relaxed. So just ready to step it up again tomorrow.
You always get different styles. I had a girl who’s maybe a bit more of a novice today. But you go in there, you do what you do every day regardless of who is in front of you.”
At men’s flyweight, Ellis Trowbridge earned the third and final win of the day for GB Boxing.
He dominated his bout with Italy’s Filippo Seca to tee up a semi-final match up with the Japan’s impressive Soushi Makino tomorrow at 18:00pm.
Trowbridge said: “I’ve recovered from countless injuries, a lot of career ending, potentially career ending injuries and I’m just grateful to be back in that ring, firing on all cylinders.
“Having a home crowd? I love it. My grandad’s up there. That means the absolute world to me. He’s not been able to watch me box in probably, I think over a year and a half. So, knowing he’s up there, gives me. that extra push and I got my partner coming tomorrow, I’ve got my mum, and we’re just going to keep on building.”
Also, in action on day two at the World Boxing Cup Finals in Sheffield was Ivy-Jane Smith and Cameron McKay in the day’s morning session as well as Olivia Holmes and Scott Richards in the day’s evening session.
Smith, McKay, Holmes and Richards all found themselves on the wrong end of split decisions in action packed contests versus Brazil’s Tatiana De Jesus, Mongolia’s Enkhtur Tegshjargal and Holland’s Gabrielle Weerheim respectively.
Joining Odel, Vivien and Ellis in tomorrow’s semi-final action are three members of the GB Boxing squad.
Welterweight Dione Burman and light-heavyweight Dimeji Shittu will be hoping to pick up where the left off having won their opening bouts on Wednesday.
Burman will face Brazil’s Beatriz Soares at 13:00pm whilst Shittu will go up against Minseong Kim at 14:30pm.
Then also at women’s welterweight, Kayla Allen will make her World Boxing Cup debut against Sukyoung Kang of Korea at 13:15pm.
