GB BOXING’s men and women have returned from the U23 European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, with nine medals, including light-welterweight Sacha Hickey and cruiserweight Teagn Stott who both won gold to be crowned champions of their respective contests.

The other medals were won by English trio Lauren Mackie (54kg), Patris Mughalzai (63.5kg) and Isaac Okoh (92kg) as well as Scotland’s Aaron Cullen (54kg) who all earned silver medals whilst Sameenah Toussaint (60kg), Jack Dryden (60kg) and Dione Burman (66kg) took bronze.

Sacha Hickey was the first of the two newly crowned champions to win gold in Sofia, as she confidently defeated Serbia’s Kristina Kuluhova 5-0 in the women’s welterweight final.

On her way to clinching top spot on the podium, the 21-year-old got the better of Ukraine’s Yuliia Filipova and Turkiye’s Esmanur Lok in equally convincing unanimous fashion.

The gold medal in Bulgaria is the second Hickey has won in the space of a month having also earned top spot at the Dacal World Cup in September.

The same can be said for the second and final gold medallist of the U23 European Championships as Teagn Stott also came into the competition off the back of a gold medal at the Dacal.

On this occasion, the cruiserweight clinched his gold medal with a classy display to outpoint Ukraine’s Ashot Kocharian unanimously.

On his way to be being crowned champion in Sofia, Stott also defeated Georgia’s Giorgii Gutsaev and Azerbaijan’s Seyid Seyidov as well as the host nation’s Makita Gorbatenko in what was one of the bouts of the tournament.

Fellow GB Boxers Patris Mughalzai and Aaron Cullen as well as Lauren Mackie and Isaac Okoh were also in action on finals day.

The pair won three and four bouts respectively on their way to their final bouts, with both having to settle for silver following 4:1 split decision.

It was a similar story for Mackie and Okoh who whilst unanimously beaten in the final, secured multiple victories on their way to achieving a major medal on the European stage.

Elsewhere across the home nations, three other boxers picked up medals with Scottish duo Caitlin Kelly (70kg) and Allan Perrie (75kg) as well as England’s Leo Wood (57kg) all earning bronze.
