FOUR boxers from the GB Boxing will leave the World Boxing Cup in Mongolia with bronze medals.
England’s Paddy Hewitt, Ivy-Jane Smith and Elise Glynn as well as Wales’ Scott Richards all earned their medals after reaching the semi final stages in what was the third World Boxing Cup event this year hosted by new international federation, World Boxing, following the England (Sheffield) and America (Colorado) iterations earlier this year.
Patris Mughalzai and Dione Burman also competed this week in Ulaanbaatar but missed out on the medal stages.
Competing for the first time at the new weight of light-middleweight (71kg), Paddy Hewitt won the most bouts of any GB Boxer this week following a first round RSC victory versus Singapore’s Sivaraj Manickam in his opening bout as well as a 4:1 split decision over Italy’s Gabriele Rontani.
Despite these impressive wins, the Lancashire boxer had to settle for bronze after he was unanimously beaten by the host nation’s Mischeel Battumur in his semi-final clash.
Also competing at a new weight was Elise Glynn, who entered the lightweight contest.
After beating Mongolia’s Badmaarag Ganzorig unanimously in her opening bout, the 23-year-old was unlucky not to reach the 60kg final after finding herself on the wrong end of a narrow 3:2 split decision against Japan’s Ayaka Taguchi.
Glynn’s bronze medal in Ulaanbaatar means she has won a medal at every World Boxing Cup event so far after winning gold in Colorado and silver in Sheffield.
Bantamweight Ivy-Jane Smith earned the team’s first victory in Mongolia this week when she beat the hosts Mungunsaran Balsan via unanimous decision but in her semi-final clash with fellow Mongolian, Michibmaa Erdendedalai, it was Smith who this time was on the end of a 5-0 defeat.
It was similar scenario for Wales’ Scott Richards who after outpointing South Korea’s Taegeun Yoon in the eyes of all five judges was then handed the same fate by China’s Chuang Liu and therefore taking a bronze medal this time out.
