GB Boxers return from Boxam with 14 medals, including five gold

GB BOXER’s have returned from this year’s edition of the Boxam, held in La Nucia, Spain, with 14 medals including five golds for: Alice Pumphrey (50kg), Amber Moss-Birch (75kg), Ellis Trowbridge (51kg), Isaac Okoh (92kg) and Damar Thomas (92kg+).

The other medals were claimed by Vivien Parsons (57kg), Ella Thompstone (63kg), Kayla Allen (66kg), Paddy Hewitt (71kg) and Dimeji Shittu (80kh) had to settle for silver this time out having reached their respective finals.

Whilst the final four bronze medals were awarded to Olivia Holmes (57kg), Scott Richards (51kg), Will Hewitt (60kg) and Teagn Stott (86kg).

The team’s first gold medal was awarded on the penultimate day of action as light-flyweight Alice Pumphrey was crowned champion in her debut tournament as a GB Boxer.

Pumphrey took on Ukraine’s Yaroslava Marynchuk in what was a fiercely contested bout but thankfully it was the Brit who did enough in the eyes of the judges to seal a 3:2 victory.

At middleweight, teammate Amber Moss-Birch, also competing on the penultimate day of action seized gold when she put in a confident performance to secure a unanimous point victory over the host nation’s Dunia Martinez in what was her third bout in four days.

Moss-Birch’s earlier triumphs in the week came against Ukraine’s Mariya Borutsa as well as Spain;s Anastasiya Sokolovka.

Moving into the final day of action and first to step through the ropes and clinch gold was flyweight Ellis Trowbridge.

The boxer, who recently earned a silver medal at last year’s World Boxing Finals, went one step further this time out following a 3:2 split victory over Spain’s former European champion, Martin Molina.

Trowbridge also defeated Portugal’s Armenio Reis and Ukraine’s Siiovuch Mussinov on his way to the 51kg final.

Next up, this time in the heavyweight division, Isaac Okoh confidently outpointed Wales’ Conor Williams 5-0 to seal his gold medal in La Nucia in what was his third unanimous victory of the week having earned successes over boxers from China and Spain.

Concluding the final day and this year’s Boxam competition as a whole was super-heavyweight Damar Thomas.

The 92kg+ boxer took on Ukraine’s Vasyl Tkachuk for a chance to win gold and Thomas made no mistake has sealed a unanimous victory across all five judges’ scorecards to seal his championship and the team’s five and final gold medal of the week.
