ENGLAND’S Shona Whitwell sealed her place in the lightweight last 16 on a mixed day for Great Britain’s boxers as Wales’ Helen Jones and Rosie Eccles suffered defeats.
Whitwell was the first to box for the team on day four of the Women’s World Boxing Championships against Kazakhstan’s Rimma Volossenko and St Ives boxer wasted no time in demonstrating her skills across the three rounds to earn a split victory (4:0)
She will now face Serbia’s Natalia Sadrina on Sunday 15th May for a place in the quarter-final stages.
In the welterweight division, Rosie Eccles took on Charlie Cavanagh of Canada and the two were hard to separate throughout however it was the Canadian who narrowly edged the contest to win via split decision (3:2).
Concluding the day’s action was Helen Jones. The light-flyweight was beaten via unanimous points decision by Argentina’s Tatiana Milagros Flores.
It means Eccles and Jones exit the competition at the last 32 stage.
