Leamington Spa’s Lewis Williams delivered an impressive performance to seal England’s first win at the 2021 World Boxing Championships on a day of mixed fortunes as teammates Kiaran MacDonald and Lewis Richardson suffered defeat.
Williams took on Azerbaijan’s Rauf Rahimov in GB Boxing’s third bout of the day in Belgrade and comfortably eased to a unanimous points victory to seal his place in the last 32 of the heavyweight division.
He will now face Albania’s Indrit Laci on Friday 29th October.
In the day’s opening bout there was disappointment as Kiaran MacDonald faced a tough task against Rio 2016 silver medallist Yuberjen Martinez of Columbia.
After a strong first round from MacDonald, his opponent demonstrated his experience to seal victory via unanimous points decision.
The other boxer in action today was middleweight Lewis Richardson, who like MacDonald, was involved in another close fought encounter against the host nation’s Almir Memic.
It was a bout that saw two varied styles go up against each other but it Richardson who came out on the wrong side of a narrow split decision (4:1) which could have gone either way.
Just one boxer is in action tomorrow (Wednesday 27th October).
Competing for the first time at cruiserweight, stepping up from light-heavyweight, is Conner Tudsbury and he will face Israel’s Yan Zak.
Tomorrow’s schedule (Wednesday 27th October):
Cruiserweight 86kg – Conner Tudsbury vs Yan Zak ISR – Wednesday 27th October – Afternoon session
