TEAM GB’s Lauren Price will compete in the Olympic final on Sunday after a dramatic semi-final victory over long-time rival Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands.
Despite being deduced a point in the second, Price produced a commanding final round to secure a stunning (3:2) split decision win as two of the judges’ deemed her the preferred winner after the scores could not separate them.
Only China’s Qian Li stands between her and a gold medal in the final which will take place on Sunday 8thAugust at approximately 06.45am UK Time.
Price said: “It’s pretty mad, I knew I was up against it today, we’re the best two in the world. We’ve faced each other a number of times and we know each other inside out, so it was whoever was better on the day.
“I started a little slow, but that’s when your experience comes into it – listening to my corner. I went out in the second and third round to win the fight so I’m over the moon.
“I take my hat off to her, she’s been around a while. Olympic silver medallist, she’s world-class. I’m really pleased with the decision today.
“It’s nothing new to me going into a final. I’ve been here before, Wales, Europeans, it’s nothing new to me. It’s everyone’s dream to get to that Olympic final and I’ll do my best to bring back that gold.”
