A unanimous victory for Karriss Artingstall was the highlight of a mixed opening day for Great Britain at Tokyo 2020 in the Kokugikan Arena.
Making her Olympic debut, the 26-year-old defeated 2014 African Games gold medallist, Keamogetse Sadie Kenosi of Botswana, to ensure her place in the last 16.
Showing plenty of skill and poise from the first bell to earn victory, Karriss will now face Brazil’s Jucielen Romeu in Monday’s second session with the bout time schedule for 11.35am UK Time approx.
Artingstall said, “I’m excited for this tournament and I’m in a really good shape, mentally as well as physically.
“In the previous tournament I don’t think I was as mentally prepared whereas here I’m cool, I’m calm, and I’m collected.
“All I need to do is make sure I switch on as soon as I hear that first bell – I’m capable of beating all the girls at this tournament.
“Seeds mean nothing to me. It’s just a number at the end of the day. As long as I’m in there on my A game I know I’m a nightmare for anyone to beat.”
Fellow featherweight Peter McGrail was through the ropes shortly after but was unfortunately unable to follow in his teammate’s footsteps.
The Commonwealth Games gold medallist was beaten unanimously by Thailand’s Chatchai Butdee who is competing at his third Olympic Games.
It means Peter exits Tokyo 2020 at the round of 32 stage.
