BLOG: Inside GB Boxing with Lewis Richardson – DAY FIVE & SIX

By 13th April 2021News

The GB Boxing squad have now completed their international training camp in Ireland and returned home as they continue preparations for the European Olympic qualifier which will take place in June.

The camp saw 17 members of the squad compete with boxers from Germany, France, Italy as well as those from Ireland as they took part in gym bouts held under competition conditions.

In the final instalment in our series of exclusive blogs, middleweight, Lewis Richardson, reflects on the final few days at the overseas training camp as life as a member of the GB Boxing squad ramps up with re-start of the Olympic qualifier less than two months away.

“This was our final day sparring and it was full of quality and personal highlight was watching some of the GB boys against some of the Irish guys. There were two bouts in particular which were repeats of the 2018 Commonwealth Games finals.

“Pete McGrail against Kurt Walker and Pat McCormack against Aidan Walsh and they are all at the very top level and it’s a pleasure to watch and learn from all of these guys in this environment.

“We’ve also been doing some strength and conditioning with Gary Hutt who’s put on a good programme for us which allows to get that little bit of extra work in which we’ve needed for the camp.

“All in all, it’s been a really successful camp and it’s something I’ve massively benefitted from and would love to do it again. As a team we’re extremely grateful for Ireland who have been really welcoming and helpful throughout, answering any questions we might have during this week we’ve been away.”

“We landed in Birmingham and just as I was waiting for our luggage it gave me time to reflect once again on this camp which has been great. There’s been plenty of high-quality sparring and training as well as good food.

“We’ve definitely achieved what we wanted to as we look ahead to upcoming tournaments and the qualifiers in June. Overall, it’s been a very good trip.

“Everyone has performed brilliantly, and it’s been great to build some of those team relationships with both our teammates as well as coaches and support staff who are out here.

“It’s a brilliant programme we have here at GB Boxing and it’s thanks to everyone involved that makes camps like this possible with all the Covid protocols in place to keep us safe.”
