Seven medals guaranteed as Bocskai Memorial reaches the semi-final stage

Seven members of the GB Boxing squad have secured medals at this year’s Bocskai Memorial Tournament including Olympic hopefuls Lauren Price and Frazer Clarke as the competition reaches the semi-final stages.

After 16 months out of the ring, World and European champion Lauren Price sealed a medal and a place in the final four in her opening bout.

The Welsh middleweight last competed in October 2019’s World Championships, winning gold, until she faced Gabriele Stonkute yesterday, in which she won in routine fashion via unanimous decision.

Lauren will now face Assunta Canfora of Italy in today’s action with her goal firmly set on being once again at the top of the podium come the end of the tournament tomorrow.

Olympics hopeful Frazer Clarke maintained his winning return to competition with a routine victory against France’s Mourad Aliev via unanimous decision.

Despite suffering a cut to the head in the final round, it did not deter the heavyweight from securing his medal for the tournament as he moved into the semi-finals.

In today’s action, the 29-year-old will face off against Turkey’s Berat Acar as he hopes to earn his place in Friday’s final with his eyes firmly set on gold.

Representing Wales, Rosie Eccles made her way into today’s semi-finals by defeating Nora Halasz of Hungary in yesterday’s action.

The welterweight progressed against her opponent when the bout was abandoned in the second round.

It means that she has now secured her first medal since a bronze at the 2019 Women’s European Games in Spain regardless of today’s outcome against Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli

Lewis Richardson earned his third victory in as many days and secured himself a medal as he beat Turkey’s Serhat Guler via unanimous decision in what was another impressive display from the young middleweight.

By defeating Guler, the 22-year-old will now compete in today’s semi-final against Italy’s Giovanna Sarcioto.

Whatever the result, this will be Lewis’ first podium finish since winning gold at the Olympic Test event held in Tokyo back in 2019, following on from a bronze he earned at the Boxam in Spain earlier that year.

Gemma Richardson once again caught the eye at this year’s Bocskai, this time beating the host nation’s Aliza Doka via unanimous decision, maintaining her 100% senior record as well as earning her first senior medal.

The lightweight faces a difficult test in the semi-finals this afternoon when she faces number two seed Mira Potkonen of Finland.

40-year-old Potkonen won bronze at Rio 2016 and is also the next opponent for fellow GB member Caroline Dubois at the Boxing Road to Tokyo London Qualifier when it resumes later this year following it’s suspension last March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Bantamweight Nico Leivars maintained his rhythm in the ring by beating the host nation’s Laszlo Bernath via unanimous decision.

After forcing an early stoppage in round one of his opening bout on Monday, Nico showed equal tenacity in his second outing as his opponent was given a standing count on two occasions.

With another victory on his record Nico also secures a medal at this tournament as he heads into the semi-finals where he will face Samuel Kistohurry of France.

Welterweight Harvey Lambert was guaranteed his medal when he was handed a walkover against his Turkish opponent Turgrulhan Erdemir.

Having won his opening two bouts of the tournament, it means Harvey will now face France’s Berrouiguet Rayane Yahia in today’s semi-final knowing that whatever outcome, his place on the podium is secure.

Cheavon Clarke made his return after 16 months out of the ring having last competed at the World Championships in October 2019.

However, the heavyweight was narrowly beaten via a split decision by Frenchman Wilfried Florentin and exits the competition at the quarter-final stage.
