Four victories secured on opening day of Bocskai as Frazer Clarke returns to action after 16 months out on day two

GB Boxing started the 65th Bocskai  Memorial Tournament in style as all four boxers competing yesterday earned victories.

First up was bantamweight Nico Leivars, who was made short work of his opponent, Hungary’s Zoltan Siroki, as he forced the ref to stop the contest in the first round, securing his place in Wednesday’s quarter-final.

Elsewhere, at welterweight Harvey Lambert displayed a brilliant defence against Hungary’s Milan Horvath in his opening bout and impressed the judges enough to award him victory via unanimous decision.

The win means Harvey gets straight back in action today’s second preliminary round and he will face Algeria’s Kramou Chemseddine.

Competing for the first time since last year’s suspended Boxing Road to Tokyo London Qualifier, middleweight Lewis Richardson put in a convincing performance against Hungary’s Robert Kertesz.

Like Harvey, he too won via unanimous decision and will box again this afternoon, this time facing Algeria’s Younes Nemouchi.

Action concluded on Day One when Rosie Eccles took to the ring.

The Welsh welterweight stepped foot in the ring for the first time in just under a year, like Lewis she last competed at the London Olympic Qualifier, and earned her place in the next round beating Italy’s Angela Carini via a split decision 4:1.

With Harvey and Lewis returning to the ring, there are two more members of the GB Boxing squad to make their first appearance of the tournament today, Olympic hopeful and Commonwealth Games Gold winner Frazer Clarke and Youth World Championships Gold medallist Gemma Richardson, who today makes her senior debut.

For Frazer, this is his first time competitively stepping through the ropes in around 16 months, his last competition coming in the form of the World Championships in 2019.

The 29-year-old was set to compete at the suspended London Qualifier but was handed a bye minutes before his bout as his opponent, Italy’s Clemente Russo, withdrew with an injury.

The super heavyweight is hoping that today’s bout vs France’s Dini Djamili Aboudou is the first step in the right direction towards achieving his dream of Olympic gold later this year.

For Gemma Richardson, it will be 18-months since she won her second European Youth Gold medal in Bulgaria back in September 2019, first winning Gold a year earlier in Roseto, Pennsylvania.

The light-welterweight will today face off against Lenka Volejnikova of the Czech Republic in the final bout of today.
