GB BOXING - THE BRITISH ABA

The British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) manages the elite Great Britain squads on behalf of the English, Scottish and Welsh ABAs.

  • There are approximately 30,000 registered boxers in Great Britain
  • There are 39 places on the GB squads – that is a 1 in 770 ratio!

GB BOXING - THE SQUADS

GB Boxing manages the following three squads:

Men’s Podium Squad

Men’s Development Squad

Women’s Squad

There are 39 places in total: 30 places for men (3 places per Olympic weight category) 9 places for women (3 places per Olympic weight category)

However, GB Boxing can choose to allocate the places differently: e.g. we may not select at a certain weight category if the coaches consider that there are no boxers reaching the required standard.

SELECTION

The selection process is the same for all three squads:

1) You will have achieved success with your clubs, and in your national championships

2) You will have normally have experience of boxing with your home nation, and will have been nominated for selection by your home nation coach

3) You will have been through assessment with the GB coaches at Sheffield – you will need to show the potential to succeed at the Olympic Games

FROM CLUB TO PODIUM

Selection for the GB Boxing squads:

CLUB
You will have achieved success with your club as a senior, junior or cadet boxer. You will have achieved success with your club in your home nation championships.

HOME NATION
You will have achieved success as a boxer with your club and will normally have competed for your home nation at either junior and/or senior level. Should you reach the standard required, you will be nominated for assessment in Sheffield, which takes places at least once a year.

DEVELOPMENT
Having had success with your club and home nation, you will have been assessed by the GB coaches in Sheffield. If you are considered to have potential to reach a high international standard, but are not yet ready for the top international competition you will be considered for selection for the GB Development Squad.

PODIUM
Having had success with your club and home nation, you will have been assessed by the GB coaches in Sheffield. If you are considered to have reached the standard necessary you will be considered for selection for the GB Podium Squad. This means that you have the potential to achieve medal success at major multinational events.

FINAL POINTS ...

Whilst your achievement in home nation competition is an important element of the selection process, the GB coaching team will also be assessing your potential to succeed on an international stage.

Domestic success alone will not be enough to ensure your selection. We are looking for your potential to win Olympic medals.
