Luke Campbell has secured Team GB’s first boxing medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games with a tense 16-15 victory over Detelin Dalakliev of Bulgaria in the bantamweight quarter final.
The Hull southpaw showed composure and a calm head to overturn a one point deficit with a superb final round as the Bulgarian visibly tired and repeatedly held on.

Both fighters began at pace with Dalakliev opening up a one point lead after the first.  Campbell came back strongly in the second yet despite landing a series of clean left hands, he entered the final round one point down.

He delivered the most important three minutes of his career to take the last round 8-6 and secure the victory and a guaranteed bronze medal.  He will box Satoshi Shimizu of Japan in Friday’s semi-final.

Next up for GB Boxing are all three women and two of the men who will compete in Monday’s quarter finals for a guaranteed medal.
