The medals added to the golds won by Nicola Adams and Luke Campbell and Anthony Ogogo’s bronze to deliver a final tally of three gold, one silver and one bronze as half of the GB Boxing team won a medal.

It means that Great Britain has finished top of the boxing medal table ahead of Ukraine and Cuba.  Only cycling, rowing and athletics have secured more medals for Team GB.

Anthony Joshua’s gold medal was the crowning performance of the day as the super heavyweight overturned a three point deficit in the final round to level the scores at 18-18 and secure a dramatic victory on countback over the reigning Olympic champion, Roberto Cammarelle of Italy.

In only his 43^rd amateur bout and against an opponent with many years more experience, Joshua showed huge strength of character to get the better of the Italian with a relentless last round onslaught that saw him win Team GB’s final gold of the Games.

Earlier in the day, Wales’ Fred Evans concluded his Olympic campaign with a silver medal after losing out 17-9 to the hugely experienced Serik Sapiyev of Kazhakstan in the welterweight final.  Despite showing his usual range of skills Evans, did not have quite enough in the tank to match the powerful two-time former world champion, Sapiyev, who was named ‘Boxer of the tournament’. 

A silver medal marked a superb return for 21 year old Evans, who had became become a huge favourite of the noisy crowds at the ExCel Arena following a series of entertaining displays.
