Nicola Adams has made history by becoming the first women to ever win an Olympic boxing gold medal after defeating Ren Canan of China 16-7 in the finals of the flyweight category at the ExCel Arena in London.
Adams won with a career-defining performance as her footwork and fast hands completely outclassed the world number one from China.
She began well and opened up a 4-2 lead after the first round with a series of incisive jabs.
It was followed by a second round knockdown, courtesy of a thunderous left-right combination, and a 5-1 score in round three to give Nicola an unassailable 14-5 lead going into the last.
To the delight of the home crown she cruised through the final round to win GB Boxing’s first gold medal of the 2012 Games and become the first women to ever win an Olympic boxing title.
Speaking to the BBC, Nicola said: "It's a dream come true. I am so happy and overwhelmed with joy right now. I have wanted this all my life and I have done it. To be taking the gold medal back to Leeds will be special."
Next up for GB Boxing are the men’s semi-finals. Luke Campbell and Anthony Ogogo will box in the afternoon session from 1.30pm and Fred Evans and Anthony Joshua will compete in the evening session from 8.30pm.
