English boxer Muhammad Ali has won a silver medal at the AIBA Youth World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Having already secured qualification for the Youth Olympic Games, the Bury boxer's achievements capped a successful week for the team.

In a scrappy bout from the start, and with American boxer Shakur Stevenson trying to pull him in close and keep him there, Muhammed managed to break loose but the American's speed allowed him to slip his opponent's shots.

Team manager James Thomas said: 'This is a fantastic achievement for Mo, who also has the opportunity to represent Team GB at the Youth Olympics in August. Like Peter McGrail, who secured a bronze yesterday, Mo has been incredibly focussed throughout the competition and has been a credit to the GB team.'

The tournament was the first time a Youth team has competed as Great Britain. The team has collectively achieved two medals, three Youth Olympic qualification spots, four quarter finalists and 24 winning bouts out of 37.
A spectacular performance from seventeen-year-old Mohammad in the semi finals of the competition saw a multi national crowd on its feet and chanting 'Ali boma ye’ as he advanced into the 52kg final.

Everton Red Triangle boxer Peter McGrail won a bronze medal and qualification for the Youth Olympics, after losing his semi final against Sultan Zaurbek of Kazakhstan, following a string of excellent performances throughout the competition.

James Thomas added: 'It was a great achievement for our team captain Peter, who has been the model professional over the last twelve days, setting an example to all the team of how to conduct yourself in this major international tournament setting. Mo's place in the finals is testament to both his talent and the hard work of the coaches who have worked so hard for the team over the competition.'
